The initiative, called MyFirstEV, launched last Friday and offers instant discounts to residents purchasing or leasing an electric or hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle for the first time. Buyers can receive $3,500 off a new EV priced under $50,000, while those shopping for a used EV under $25,000 can qualify for a $1,750 discount.
The program arrives about a year after former federal EV tax credits were eliminated under President Donald Trump’s sweeping tax and spending legislation, known as the One Big Beautiful Bill. That law ended a federal incentive that had offered up to $7,500 for new EV purchases and $4,000 for used ones.
When Newsom first unveiled the program in July, he framed it as California stepping up while Washington steps back. “Putting its foot on the accelerator,” he said the state would help “make it easier for families to drive clean, breathe clean and keep more money in their pockets.”
The program is backed by $270 million in funding, split evenly between the state budget and contributions from participating automakers.
Eligibility is limited to California residents who have never previously purchased or leased an electric vehicle. Before driving off the lot, buyers must sign a legal declaration confirming this is their first EV purchase, according to Lindsay Buckley, communications director for the California Air Resources Board, which oversees the program.
